Before setting out:
- In these potentially hazardous mountainous areas, always confirm your fitness for the route you plan to follow.
- Check the forecast (see above)
- Wear suitable footwear (the most commonly neglected item by walkers needing help), suitable clothing and be properly equipped for the route you are taking, including items that might be needed in emergencies.
- Read a checklist, such as the list at GO Outdoors.
- A paper map, compass, torch and other items are essential items to carry in the more remote and potentially hazardous areas.
- Most of the items you might need, can be bought in Brecon in Gibb Outdoors, Cotswold Outdoor and Trespass.
- Unfortunately, a phone signal is not always available. When it is available, What3words provides accurate location information. Many people use GPS mapping on smart phones. This is especially useful when mist comes down, which is unpredictable and common on higher ground. Even people living locally, who know the area well, have become 'lost'. Be warned!
Asking for help on the mountains:
- The first thing to do is phone 999.
- This call centre coordinates all the rescue services that may be needed.
- Depending on the type of help needed, the Brecon Mountain Rescue team may be called in. It deploys specialist search, rescue and medical capabilities to assist those who need help on the mountains, or in the communities it serves. The Welsh Air Ambulance can be involved as well. It trains regularly in Cwm Du.
- These help and rescue services are supported by donations. The volunteers and their work are warmly supported and much admired by people living here.
